CHAPTER 12 - BEYOND RENUNCIATION AND KNOWLEDGE
Chapter 12 contains 24 verses and it is divided into 8 classes, totaling 4:15 hours.
Krishna describes the singular power of sat sanga, of seeking the company [direct or through modern channels of communication] of His devotees and how that above absolutely everything else, this will please Him and unite Him to that soul in love. In this class, we covered verses 11.12.1-2.
Now Krishna gives clear examples of the power of sat-sanga and mentions some of the Hall of Fame devotees from different species throughout the Universe, in different yugas (ages). In this class, we relish the stories of several of them. In this class, we covered verses 11.12.3-6.
In this class we understand the nature of Vrindavan and its inhabitants and the supreme power of bhakti, above all other processes of enlightenment. In this class we discuss the nature of the different relationships of the inhabitants of Vraja as well. In this class, we covered verses 11.12.7-9.
In these very important verses, Krishna Himself glorifies and explains the unparalleled spiritual perfection of the cowherd maidens (gopis) of Vrindavan, as the super excellent example of bhakti, of yoga and of samadhi. This is the most important focus of the entire Bhagavata Purana, the pinnacle of pure love of God and is glorified by Krishna Himself, as He explains it to Uddhava. In this class, we covered verses 11.12.10-12.
Krishna further explains to Uddhava that we must exclusively take shelter of Him. That alone will suffice for all perfection, He explains. But Uddhava still is unsure, so Krishna must explain further the logic behind such a strong claim. In this class, we covered verses 11.12.13-15.
Krishna now explains how easy it is to access Him, as He is present in all our senses, in our minds, in our hearts. Krishna is to be perceived by the subtle sound, internal vibrations, and externally in the vibrations of the Vedas. We also talked about the interesting difference in the concept of paganism in Europe in comparison to the demigod worship in Vedic culture. Lastly, we sorted through Krishna’s many teachings to Uddhava given so far and how to understand them as an entire process for all people, to practice at different levels. In this class, we covered verses 11.12.16-17.
Krishna continues describing to Uddhava how to come in contact with Himself and how He manifests in all creation, thus showing Uddhava how easy it is to remain in sanga, in association, with God. In this class, we covered verses 11.12.18-20.
Krishna concludes this wonderful chapter with the a tree metaphor to describe our embodied existence. We also discuss in this class the importance of jnana (knowledge) in the path of yoga and how after attaining Krishna, one can then put it aside, and just experience bhakti. In this class, we covered verses 11.12.21-24.
