CHAPTER 19 - THE PERFECTION OF SPIRITUAL KNOWLEDGE

Chapter 19 contains 45 verses and it is divided into 17 classes, totaling 8:51 hours.

We begin a new chapter dedicated to the power of jnana-yoga, the power of transcendental knowledge and wisdom to liberate the soul and join it in eternal love to Krishna. Krishna begins by explaining the limits of non-devotional knowledge and then what lies beyond it. In this class, we explain the differences between the impersonal and personal conceptions of God, the importance of studying the source of all knowledge and infinite aspect of bhakti, of love. In this class, we covered verses 11.19.1-2.

We start this class with powerful words by Krishna on the supreme importance of transcendental knowledge, as the most powerful tool to bring you to the supreme state of bhakti, of loving devotion in unlimited bliss. Krishna begins His explanation of transcendental knowledge by laying out the most important and basic explanation of the nature of the self. He explains to Uddhava how our minds and body have attached themselves to us, though we are not them. In the class we then explained the difference between mundane religiosity and true spirituality, and of going beyond the concepts of “transactional religiosity”. In this class, we covered verses 11.19.6-7.

Uddhava now makes a series of questions to Krishna, by first explaining the dire situation of the living entities, with a sobering and graphic alert. People, however, fail to understand the problem and for that reason fail to seek the solution being offered by Krishna. In this class, we covered verses 11.19.8-11.

Krishna teaches Bhismadeva’s words of wisdom in his deathbed of arrows after the Battle of Kurukshetra. In his last moments, Bhisma shared his vast knowledge of dharma and spirituality to Yudhisthira, in the presence of Krishna Himself. Here Krishna will share with Uddhava some of the key points of sankhya philosophy, used to achieve moksha, liberation. In this class, we covered verses 11.19.12-16.

After first presenting the concept of Indic Epistemology presented by Krishna, which is the branch of philosophy that studies the nature of knowledge, in this class we see an important list of the top 15 bhakti-yoga techniques that will grant spiritual perfection, taught by Krishna to Uddhava, “because you love Me”. In this class, we covered verses 11.19.17-24.

Why love God? What’s the point? In this class, I explain why it’s worth our effort to love God, from a purely experiential perspective. We then finish going over the rest of the top 15 bhakti-yoga techniques that will Krishna says will grant us love for Him. In this class, we covered verses 11.19.20-24.

Why is there evil in the world? In this class, Krishna explains how different states of consciousness arise and lead to different types of behaviour. Our worldviews shape the nature of our being, which is why the cultivation of jnana, of knowledge and wisdom, is the basis for individual and societal change. In this class, we covered verses 11.19.25-26.

In Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, one of the most famous teachings are of the 5 yamas and 5 niyamas. But here in the Uddhava Gita we find Krishna’s version, with 12 yamas and 12 niyamas. The yamas and niyamas provide a brilliant guiding light of life’s most important practices, with the yamas being the things we should practice to avoid mistakes and niyamas being the things we should strive for to further our growth. In this class, we discuss at length the real meaning of detachment and begin the study of the yamas. In this class, we covered verses 11.19.27-35.

There’s a new Uddhava-gita class available with very important topics. We continue in this class to cover Krishna’s version of the 12 yamas and 12 niyamas. In this class, we go over the following wonderful qualities in yamas section: *humility, being non-possessive, faith, brahmacarya, silence, steadiness, and forgiveness*. In this class, we covered verses 11.19.33-35.

We are studying Krishna’s 12 yamas and 12 niyamas. In this class, we finish the yamas with fearlessness and then start the niyamas with cleanliness (purity) and japa. In this class, we covered verses 11.19.33-35.

We now finish describing Krishna’s 12 yamas and 12 niyamas. In this class, we cover the last niyamas covering a group of spiritual/religious practices such as serving the guru and pilgrimage, but also the more life-defining concept of “para-artha-iha” – living a life of supreme purpose. In this class, we covered verses 11.19.33-35.

What is mental equilibrium? What is real tolerance? What is the greatest charity? These and other important terms are now defined by Krishna after he just finished describing the 12 yamas and 12 niyamas. Krishna’s definition of these terms reveals a deeper meaning to them and the pathway to achieving them.. In this class, we covered verses 11.19.36-39.

We continue with Krishna’s wonderful definitions of key terms in the path of self-realization. These definitions shed light on what’s needed to achieve spiritual perfection. We’ll study here what is tapas? What is cleanliness? What is true heroism? And more! In this class, we covered verses 11.19.36-39.

In this class we will continue with Krishna’s wonderful definitions of key terms in the path of self-realization. These sutra-like brief definitions open our eyes to deeper meanings to inspire and guide us to higher states of consciousness. What is true wealth? What is the supreme goal of life? This and more in this class.! In this class, we covered verses 11.19.36-45.

Krishna redefines the goals of human life from the spiritual point of view, giving us new definitions to key things such as beauty and happiness that turn our view of the world upside down. In this class, we covered verses 11.19.36-45.

Who is wise and who is a fool? What is the real path of life? What is heaven and what is hell? These and other important topics are succinctly explained by Krishna as we come to the end of this power chapter on transcendental knowledge. In this class, we covered verses 11.19.40-45.
